Zimbra is a terrific and innovative group collaboration suite owned by Yahoo. http://www.zimbra.com/ Zimbra is open source server and client software for messaging and collaboration - email, group calendaring, contacts, and web document management and authoring. The Zimbra server is available for Linux, Mac OS X, appliances, and virtualization platforms. The Zimbra Web 2.0 Ajax client runs on Firefox, Safari, and IE, and features easy integration / mash-ups of web portals, business applications, and VoIP using web services.
I was looking to migrate my company to the Zimbra platform. Zimbra has many third-party hosting partners that can host the Zimbra platform for you. http://www.zimbra.com/partners/zimbra_hosting.html
01.com was chosen based on 5 factors:
1. Support - they provide a 24/7 toll free 1-888 number for any technical support requirements. They are also available on iChat.
2. SLA Guarantee - they promise a 99.75% uptime per month. They refund part of your monthly fee if any downtime exceeds 0.25% in a month.
3. Transparency - Unlike some companies which may try and hide they true uptime statistics, 01.com provides statistics based on a
third-party monitoring company: http://watcher.01.com/
4. Affordability - very cost effective. About $49.99 US per user per year.
5. Data Center - 01.com operates in a a carrier-class internet data center which includes load-balanced, enterprise servers and network
hardware.
6. Expert staff consists of Certiļ¬ed Help Desk, Tech Consultants, SysAdmins & Programmers
Around mid October 2008, 01.com experienced a major hardware crash which took down many customers for many hours. It has been over a month and despite talk of redundant data center and offsite backups, we are still waiting for data to be restored to our accounts!
01.com uses a help desk interface and posts notices of all system-related events. This is very helpful to keep track of all system-related disruptions or scheduled maintenance. I discovered that all notices related to the crash and the data restoration process were deleted from the help desk! Other postings related to standard router maintenance and system upgrades, etc remained online, yet 01.com seems to have completed deleted any mention related to the crash and data loss.
01.com on paper appears to be a great hosting company - sla guarantee, affordable, 24/7 support, solid data center. However, there is no excuse for taking over 4 weeks to restore client data.
I would recommend avoiding 01.com until they can demonstrate proper data backup procedures and show greater transparency.
Overall rating - 2 out of 5.
UPDATE: Other people have started to post about 01.com's shortcomings:
